The Library Dragon - Carmen Deedy
Kid Pix (computer program) |
Assessment Option(s):
Anecdotal notes from class discussion.
Pictures and sentences created on the computer. |
Activity: *Discuss library rules.
*Take a picture walk through The Library Dragon, looking at each picture. Ask children to predict what the story will be about.
*Tell children that they will be listening to a book about a librarian who is very picky about her library. Tell them to listen for ways that the librarian keeps her things looking nice, and to listen for a problem this might cause.
*Read The Library Dragon.
When finished with reading the book, discuss:
*What kinds of things did the Library Dragon do to keep the library looking clean?
*Why was this a problem for the children in the school?
*What do you think the reason was for the Library Dragon being so picky? (She wanted the library to look nice)
*What happened in the book to make the Library Dragon change into Miss Scales?
*Do you think Miss Scales can be nice and keep the library clean?
*What are other jobs people have that help our school be a great place to be?
*List on the board people in the school and what they do for us. (Secretary, custodian, principal, lunchroom staff, etc.)
*Take the list to the computer lab with the class. If they have NOT been introduced to KidPix yet, give them a session to experiment with it.
*Tell the children that they are going to be using the computers today to draw a picture of one of the people who help make our school so special. Then they will write a sentence or more on their screen describing what that person does.
*Print out the pictures and sentences. Bind them together into a class book and display in the classroom.
