Assessment Option(s):
Anecdotal: group role-playing

Activity:
*Tell children they will be listening to a book about a little girl who has a problem and solves it. Ask them to listen for the problem and solution and to be ready to discuss the book.

*Read Too Many Tamales aloud to the class. When you get to the point in the story where the girl decides to play with her mother's ring, ask the students to predict what will happen to the girl or to the ring.

*After finishing the story, ask the children to tell you what the problem was in the story. (Maria lost her mother's ring when she wasn't supposed to be playing with it.)
*What did Maria do to solve the problem?
*Do you think that was a good solution to the problem? Why or why not?
*Was Maria honest with her mother at first?
*What happened when Maria told her mother the truth?
*What might have happened if Maria had told her mother the truth when she first realized it was gone?

*Divide children into 5 groups. Have 5 questions ready for the children to pick and read aloud to the class. (See ideas for the questions below)
*You are spending the night with a friend. When you get home, you realize one of your friend's toys is in your bag. What should you do?
*At the grocery store with your mother, you feel hungry, so you take a candy bar and eat it. What should you do?
*Your best friend tells you that his big brother did his homework for him last night. What should you do?
*Your mother has an expensive doll that she asks you not to touch. You play with it anyway and break it. What should you do?
*You did not finish your homework because you were playing Nintendo. What should you tell your teacher?

*Give each group 10 minutes to read their question and decide how to act it out.

*Each group will read its question to the class. As each question is read, ask the group to act out the honest way to handle the situation. Discuss what would happen if people did not tell the truth about things.
