Media Specialist of the Year

Media Specialist of the Year

Gwinnett's Library Media Specialist of the Year title is awarded for individual excellence in the library media field through service to students, teachers, and the community at the K-12 level. Selection by the school system library media committee is based on an individual's promotion of reading and literature, leadership role, and involvement of parents and community members as partners. Parents, teachers, and administrators are invited each year to nominate a media specialist for the county-wide honor.

Congratulations to Jim Stewart,
North Gwinnett High School

Media Services and Technology would like to congratulate Jim Stewart, Media Specialist from North Gwinnett High School, who was named the 2013- 2014 Gwinnett County School Library Media Specialist of the Year (MSOY). The Library Media Specialist of the Year Award is awarded for individual excellence in the library media field through service to students, teachers, and community at the K-12 levels.

As a high school media specialist, Jim Stewart believes “...that the most important part of my job is to assist my students and staff as they become effective consumers and creators of information. An ardent collaborator, Jim finds special “joy helping teachers rework a previously established project.” For example, he worked closely with the Economics course team to replace the traditional notebook presentation with a student-built website that students submitted as part of their “The Life Project”. In addition, Jim showed teachers how to use an online database to collect web addresses for the finished projects. These changes not only saved teachers a lot of time, but also taught students how to apply technology while they learned important economic principles. “Jim has built a strong reputation that represents service and student academic success,” noted Mr. Ballantine, Principal of North Gwinnett High School.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and a Master of Science degree from North Georgia College and State University. He completed his Media Specialist certification at the University of Georgia. Jim has an exemplary record of leadership accomplishments that include North Gwinnett High School Teacher of the Year (2003, 2011), School Council Member, and membership on the Gwinnett County Media Leadership Team.

The Library Media Specialist of the Year for Gwinnett County will be entered into the GLMA District level to compete for the Metro District Media Specialist of the Year.
