The Norton media center strives to provide a safe and inviting environment that encourages the entire school community to access materials in a variety of formats for knowledge and enjoyment. The media center includes resources which support Gwinnett County's AKS and the Georgia Performance Standards and is a place where everyone is welcome. A few of the media center’s goals are to promote students' interest in reading and learning, teach students strategies needed to access information, and develop student’s abilities to use information effectively.
Kindergarten students may check out one book at a time. First grade students may check out one book at the beginning of the school year and in January, they begin checking out two books. Students in grades 2-5 may check out two books at a time. All books can be kept for up to two weeks. Should a book be returned damaged or if a book is lost, there is a replacement fee of $15.00 for hardback books and $5.00 for paperback books. Students will not be able to check out additional books until books are paid for or returned.
Norton Elementary participates in the Accelerated Reader Program. Accelerated Reader (AR) books are books with a specific colored dot on the spine. Students bringing home these books have the opportunity to take an AR quiz when they return to school. The purpose of the AR program is to strengthen student comprehension and promote reading. Students earn rewards when they reach their goals. Check out the AR List link on our webpage for a list of books. There is also a list of our school's books at the Public Library on Lenora Church Road.
